Coral Tooth or Hericium Coralloides is one of the four types of Hericiums found in North America. It is also widely distributed in Europe, growing in India, Russia, China and Japan. In China, it is highly valued for its medicinal properties and is widely consumed. Like all other types of Hericium, it contains a compound called “erinacines” which is increasingly being studied for it’s neuroprotective effects and has shown potential in treating Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Coral Tooth or Hericium Coralloides is one of the four types of Hericiums found in North America. It is also widely distributed in Europe, growing in India, Russia, China and Japan. In China, it is highly valued for its medicinal properties and is widely consumed. Coral Tooth is Saprobic and possibly parasitic, growing in clusters or individually on fallen hardwood branches and stumps. It is a large, white to creamy mass with numerous branches that are toothed, coarse and growing downwards.
This mushroom is sometimes described as looking like a fungal icicle. It is best picked when white as when it has become yellow in color, it will likely have a sour and unpleasant flavor. As with most mushrooms, it must be cooked before eating. Fairly easy to cultivate and a nutritional powerhouse, this mushroom is a great addition to your collection!
